NYC: Art Outing
Each week Rob & I take one girl each on a date. This week I took Lula to the Earth Room, a loft filled with several feet of earth and maintained with regular watering for the last 30 years. There is also a full-time staff member assigned to sit in the gallery next to the Earth Room. Lula wanted to know if there were worms in it. There used to be but they ran out of organisms to eat. It's located on Wooster street between Houston and Prince - the back windows facing our old loft on West Broadway. Were we still living there in '77? Dad do you remember the Earth Room?
After the Earth Room, we went to the Deitch Projects Gallery on Wooster between Grand and Canal exhibiting Totalities by Chris Johanson.
Lula & I walked around, up the ramp, through the structure with a rotating wooden shape in the middle of painting on stands, then around and up some stairs to another ramp, more paintings a bunch of chairs and more paintings in another room. While it was fun to walk around the art I would have liked to see something more organic and tied into the theme. The art didn't seem to have much to do with the layout and could have been any paintings at all.
Across the street is a possibly commissioned art piece written about in the New York Times.

Hi Zoe,
I bought the Great Barrington house in 1977 but I was back and forth to NYC quite a lot. The loft was sold around 1980. I don't remember the Earth Room. Looks like it could use a good sweeping.

How could we have missed the truckloads of soil!
It was the 70s. You probably thought one of the neighbors was growing his/her own.
